The Dangers of Tanning Beds--"Spray it, dont bake it"

I used to frequent the tanning bed quite often when I was a young'n. I found it really helped reduce the appearance of my acne scaring. BUT now, I truly know how damaging they are. I have been through so many awful experiences with friends, bad burns, and skin cancer scares. It is just not worth it.

That's why I started offering spray tanning. I know how rockin' an awesome tan can really boost your confidence. It improves the appearance of scars and stretch marks, highlights muscle tone and helps give you a leaner look, you look well rested and refreshed, your teeth look whiter....I could go on and on. And I give my clients those results in under 15 minutes, and its INSTANT.

I also wanted to share the true dangers of tanning beds. Everyone keeps saying things like, "its nice to have that 20 min of relaxation in the tanning bed. Its warm and its like a little getaway." Or, "Its a good source of Vitamin D. I always feel better after having a tan." Well- I here is a good suggestion, Try yoga or meditating. That's a nice 20 min breather to yourself. Or take some vitamin D supplements, take a walk outside, it may be cold right now, but its totally worth it rather than experiencing this.....

See those goggle marks around her eyes? They’re a dead giveaway of a tanning-bed baker. If she had skipped the fryer, her whole face would be as clear of damage as those reverse raccoon eyes are! Regular use of tanning beds escalates sun damage big time. It actually quadruples the risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, according to a study from the University of Minnesota’s Masonic Cancer Center and School of Public Health. The International Agency for Research on Cancer, an affiliate of the World Health Organization, lists ultraviolet (UV) tanning devices among the most dangerous cancer-causing substances. Feeling guilty about having tanned back in the day? Don’t worry too much. The risk of melanoma depends more on how much a person tans than on their age.

Every year more than one million people are diagnosed with skin cancer in the United States. Despite this fact, hundreds of thousands of people routinely visit tanning salons.
Are tanning booths less dangerous than tans from the sun? The fact is that the UVA rays that are emitted from the Ultraviolet A light sources in tanning salons are two to three times more powerful than the UVA rays which occur naturally from the sun.

What are the long-term effects of UV exposure?

Over time, the effects of too much UVA exposure can lead to eye damage, immune system changes, cataracts, wrinkles and premature aging of the skin, and skin cancers. Look at your own skin and compare areas such as the front of your hands and your face to areas that are almost never exposed to solar radiation. The difference in skin texture, tone, wrinkles, ect. that you see are caused by exposure to the sun.
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer and approximately 90% of all skin cancers can be traced to UV exposure. Skin cancer most often occurs on the face, and almost never on the buttocks, inner thighs, or under the arms. The three main types of skin cancer are melanoma, basal-cell carcinoma, and squamous-cell carcinoma. Malignant melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and its incidence is rapidly rising in women under 40.

Warning Signs of Skin Cancer

As with many cancers, early detection and treatment offers your best chance of remission and survival. Here are some signs that may indicate skin cancer:

A skin abnormality that increases in size and appears multicolored, pink, red, black, brown, tan, pearly, translucent, or tan.
A mole that changes color, textures, grows, becomes irregular in shape, or that is bigger than a pencil eraser.
A spot or growth that continually itches, hurts, becomes crusty, scabs, or bleeds.
An open sore that does not heal after 4 weeks or one that heals and reopens.

Regular skin self-exams could save an estimated 4,500 lives annually. Anytime you are concerned about a growth or spot on your skin, it is best to seek the advice of your physician.

Protecting Your Skin

Most of us know the importance of using a sunscreen to help prevent damaging rays from penetrating our skin. Using the proper SPF for your skin type and circumstances may lower your risk of skin cancer, however sunscreens will not undo damage that has already been done to your skin.
Those who seek their tans from tanning salons should be aware of recent research classifying tanning booths as a known carcinogen and keep these points in mind:

Those who burn easily or never tan in the sun should not use tanning salons.
Check with your pharmacist for possible drug interactions.
UV radiation can aggravate cold sores in people who are prone to them.
Always use the protective goggles which should be available at the tanning salon. Your eyes can be severely burned by the intense UV rays emitted by the light source.

Glitz + Glamour at the 2012 Golden Globes. A+ picks of the night!

I truly thought the men and ladies of the 2012 Golden Globes last night looked great. There were some fabulous beauty and fashion trends. Im loving the nearly nude dresses, and the jewel tones as well. LOVE the big voluminous hair, messy updos, smokey eyes and bold lips, lots of golden bronzed skin. It was a fabulous red carpet and here are my "A+ Picks of the night"

HAIR

I loved the volume and height, waves and curls that I saw on the ladies last night.

I also loved the glamorous updos that the ladies were rockin.....

(My favourite was Nicole Richies. I thought it was so edgy and sleek. Charlize's was stunning though, with that sparkly head band. These are some fabulous updos for my future brides out there!)

For makeup on the red carpet there was alot of smokey, sultry eyes. And again the trending nude look as well. As you can see from the above hair picture all three ladies are rockin' a natural nude lip which looks fantastic with their golden complections and more natural eye makeup, although Nicole Richie had a more dramatic eye, the nude lip really balanced out her edgy hair and metallic dress. I think if she has a bolder lip she would have looked to "heavy".

I LOVED these makeup looks. Julianne Moore, and "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo's" Rooney Mara looked sizziling with smokey seductive eyes. Both with a nude lip. I was so happy to see Angelina Jolie with a classic red lip. Her makeup and hair complimented her dress perfectly. And she still went a little more dramatic on the eye. Her skin just looks flawless. I thought she looked stunning. I was in love with Jessica Biel's look. I thought she looked great. I love that she darkened her hair slightly, which works perfectly with a beautiful peach blush and love the pink-nude lip. She looks beautiful!

We also saw lots of bronzed and glowing skin last night!

Both men and women were bronzed and beautiful. They looked radiant and glowing -- and you know thats the help of airbrush spray tanning. Helps to give them the sunkissed look. Spray tans are packed full of bronzers and shimmers, gives you the instant glow. LOVE it.

All the stars looked amazing. I look forward to every red carpet event to share with you my favourite looks.
I cannot wait to see the OSCARS!!!! The grand daddy of the red carpet looks.

I wanted to share some amazing images from a mini photoshoot from Halloween weekend!

Friend and über talented photographer Samantha Erin, of Samantha Erin Photography contacted me last week for her makeup to do a mini Halloween photoshoot. She dressed up as Little Red Riding Hood, while Katherine one of her second-photographers for weddings and a “senior” member of her girl’s photography club captured these stunning images. The edits are done by Samantha Erin, and The "big bad wolf" is played by a furry-friend of hers, Loki.

Fabulous Fitness Models

Last week I had the pleasure of glamming up some beautiful fitness for some photoshoots captured by Paul Nelson Images.

PNI Specializes in local and destination wedding photography, couples and engagement photography, event photography covering corporate functions and golf tournaments. They also provide services in portraiture and family photography, fitness, high school senior, and commercial photography. A Fabulous company to work with, they provide their services in Toronto, Barrie, Central Ontario, and worldwide.

Both ladies are a part of the Pro Revolution Inc. Team, trained by Jason Pilon. These ladies are very inspiring. They have been working extremely hard to get to where they are. They were both such a pleasure to work with, and absolutely rocked it at their shoots. Here are some images!

Robyn Stone is a IDFA Pro. Last year, at the IDFA event in Toronto, Stone competed in the novice fitness model division, placing 1st at her first major competition. She completed that competition with three major awards and her professional card. This weekend she will be competing in the professional division at the International Drug-Free Association (IDFA) World Championships and Pro Universe competition.

Shelly Anne Penner competed in her first competition this past weekend at the 2011 IDFA Ottawa-Gattineau Classic. Her hard work and determination definitely paid off, as she placed 1st in the novice fitness model division! Penner is also competing this weekend at the IDFA World Championships and Pro Universe competition.

I held a spray tan special for one month which began September 6th. The special ran for one month, and during that time clients were invited to receive a spray tan at a special $15 off the regular price with a donation to The Barrie Food Bank.

Perfect Parry Sound Wedding!

In June, I was asked to glam up some loveley ladies for a wedding at a cottage on Otter Lake, Parry Sound, Ontario. She warned me I had to get there by boat. (I did have the image in my mind on a super fast speed boat, my hair flying everywhere, me holding on to my makeup for dear life. lol) It was a beautiful boat ride on the lake. They have a charming cottage right on the water!

The girls were awesome and Meagans parents were awesome hosts, very accomodating if there was anything I needed.

Booking your wedding in another country can also be scary. Putting your trust and faith in professionals in another country can work out for some, but has been a nightmare for others…photographers not showing up, weddings starting late, rooms getting mixed up, brides being un happy with overpriced hair and makeup services…

When booking your destination wedding consider bringing your own Bridal Crew to
do all the work for you! After all It is one of the most important days of your life!

Wedding Planner

Your wedding planner is the connection between you, the resort, and anything else your wedding may require. Having an experienced and professional planner at your side, you will be able to focus more on enjoying your time away with your loved ones and less time making sure all the little extras and important details are being taken care of and done properly. Yes, most resorts do offer their own local wedding coordinators, however these coordinators often have to arrange multiple weddings at a time throughout the week of your stay. This can lead to major conflicts and problems for your own wedding! Bringing your wedding planner will allow for the two planners to make sure all the arrangements are being done exactly how you want.

Photographers

It can come with its price, but your photos are your memories for years to come. When you hire an experienced local photographer that can attend your destination wedding you can be assured you will keep your memories for a lifetime. Most resorts offer to arrange a local photographer, but the quality is often without comparison to those we trust at home.

Hiring a photographer to bring with you as part of your “Bridal Crew”, you are able to see the quality of the photographer’s work prior to your special day, you have the opportunity to meet the photographer, and perhaps have already experienced their work first hand. It’s also best to hire someone who has had travel experience. Ask if he or she has shot the type of weather you expect to be in, as each location can have different elements that affect how the pictures should be taken. Another plus to bringing your own photographer is that you may have different opportunities for other photo sessions. Most “trash the dress” photo shoots are taken a day or two following the wedding, and you may want added photo sessions while going on excursions during your stay. Hiring a photographer locally versus from the resort will most often allow for these fantastic added bonuses.

This may seem ultra diva, but taking a hair stylist/makeup artist with you can really take care of the finishing touches for your bridal look. Consider the elements that are involved when making yourself up on the big day: humidity, time, maybe too may daiquiris yourself? :)

Most brides feel that they will be able to take care of their makeup and hair, but often the day comes and something unexpected comes up. Most resorts offer hairstyling and makeup, but remember, they don’t know you and your style. There can also be extra stress if there is a language barrier. There may be a big difference in the quality of the product being used, or you also may not have the opportunity to book a trial prior to your big day. Bringing on artist/hairstylist with you most often are on call from the moment we start the process till the last picture is done. A bride gets the look she wants and the finish she wants. You don’t have to worry about your face being shiny or lipstick fading. You will then have the artist/stylist on hand for any other photo sessions throughout the week like a “trash the dress” session or pre wedding pictures.

10.10.10 was a perfect Autumn day...and a very popular wedding date. I had the pleasure of working with a beautiful bride Carla. AND was part of a new reality wedding show called Rich Groom, Poor Groom. (Similar to Rich Bride, Poor Bride.) The premise of the show is that the bride has to give up control of the wedding to the groom.

When To Toss It!

Almost every woman has a hidden makeup drawer filled with “sometimes” makeup that she “sometimes” uses. Truth is, we know we are NEVER going to use it. And chances are most of that makeup is GARBAGE! So Get rid of it! The products can get contaminated which is not good...
Bacterial Contamination = Infection! Symptoms can include redness, pain, swelling, pus, pimples or pink eye. YIKES!

And honestly, how many of you ladies have actually gone through your makeup bag or kit and gone through your make up to see how long you have actually had most of your products for? Well, just like food, makeup does come with an expiry date. Makeup expiry dates are not mandatory in Canada or the U.S., most beauty products that are sold in Europe do have the Period After Opening (PAO) symbol which is an open jar and monthly designation indicating when to toss it on their products. Here are some timelines for makeup products when you should TOSS IT!

Disclaimer/Disclosure:
I'm not a representative for any of the products and or companies listed/used/mentioned in my blogs or any of it's affiliates. I'm not paid by any companies to write this blog. All products were purchased by me for my own use.

Liquid Foundation: Once you open your foundation, its good for no more than one year. Keep your brushes, sponges or fingers clean when applying your foundation to prevent contamination. (Please try not to use your fingers! You are just applying oil from your fingers on to your face!)

Powders: Can be stored for at least a year no more than two after you have opened.

Eyeshadows: Not gonna lie, I myself have a TON of eyeshadows, but after 2 years ditch ‘em! Cream shadows no more than 1 year.

Eyeliner: Liquid liner or creams, no more than 6 months. Pencils no more than 3 years. Keep them sharpened regularly. If you can, spritz them with some rubbing alchohol before you sharpen to kill any surface germs.
I love creams and shadow liners personally. (Get a super flat, angled liner brush, dampen the brush a little with some water and just dab in your shadow. Or use your cream liner. Wiggle or do little “dashes” into your lash line and voila!) I love Cliniques Brush on cream liner. It’s Long-wearing, waterproof and comes complete with a mini Eye Liner Brush! www.clinique.ca

Mascara: No more than 3 months. Don’t pump your mascara either ladies. All that does is add air into the product, dries it out, and promotes bacteria growth.

Lipsticks: Ditch after 2 years MAX. Keep out of sunlight also, to prevent drying out. Here’s a tip: Shade your lips in with lip liner (which should be dumped after 3 years) before you apply your lipstick. This will help your colour last longer throughout the day! And I do prefer pencil lip liners-the push up ones always break off, you can never tell when your about to run out. Can’t be bothered!

Cleansers and Moisturizers: Get rid of them after 6 months to a year. Try and get the ones in tubes and pumps instead of jars, they are exposed to less air.

Brushes: Try and wash at least once a month with a mild shampoo or brush cleaner. I usually spray mine after every use with Quo brush cleanser. www.shoppersdrugmart.ca

Lipgloss: 6-9months. Especially since usually women gloss their lips daily! My fav is CARGO’s Classic and Blu_Ray gloss. They come with “Timestrip” technology! How fancy! When the meter in the gloss turns totally red, trash it and try a new shade! www.cargocosmetics.com

Also, follow these rules with your makeup...Wash your hands before applying, don't share makeup, do not add water or saliva to moisten your makeup, (If its dry say good bye!) keep your makeup in a dry area, away from heat or sunlight.

Here are some red flags that will tell you if your makeup is bad... the product’s smell has changed, if it has been exposed to heat, there is an obvious colour or change in texture, or if there is Mould. (Please don't let it get to that point! That's just nasty!)

When it's time to replace, put on a happy face! Who doesnt like to shop for makeup?

What a gorgeous weekend!

We had fantastic weather for Easter weekend did we not!? Loved it!! I had a jam packed couple of days! I first had an amazing shoot with Rowell photography again on Friday.

Shooting in the city! I miss Toronto sooo much!! :(

The shoot was fantastic we had a stunning model. Just beautiful. And I got to work with my girl Michelle P who is an awesome hair stylist.

Can't wait to post pics!! I just love shooting with Rowell. They are such a great team. And produce amazing work. So happy I have been given the opportunity to work with them.
I then had a fabulous Easter dinner with the fam jam out in Hamilton. Most random hillarious family dinner I have had. Good times.
And today, I was intereviewed for an article being written about me that will be in next weeks edition of the Barrie Advance! How cool!?!
Now I am getting all ready for wedding season. Pretty much kicks off for me this month. And I get to glam up some friends in the next couple of weekends! Love love love!!

Well, the 1st annual "Let's Celebrate Mental Health!" was a great success, and is only going to keep getting better and better! I am very proud of not only myself, but all the other local business and vendors, family and friends, media and members of city council, that supported this event! It was awesome!!

We had such great raffle prizes, amazing guest speakers, fantastic vendors offering all kinds of great services and knowledge. I got so much positive feedback! I can't wait until next year!! :)

I really have to thank Innisbrook Golf Course for holding the event, Coun. Andrew Prince for speaking at the event, and telling his brave story, he was awesome! My amazing on location photographers SP Photography and Vanessa Marie Dewsbury, the gorgeous models that showcased "By The Sea's" fantastic clothes, All the vendors including "The Healing Oasis", "Adams Massage Therapy", "CURVES", "Usana Health Sciences", "Women for Women", "Oxygen Salon & Spa", "Harmony Health Services", "Cafe of Life", Michelle P from "Envy Salon" and Melanie Bouffard from "Three Small Rooms Salon" and all of the other vendors who donated to the event!

And to all who attended! It would have been nothing without your support! I truly appreciate all the love and support from family and friends!

My hopes are just to continue to educate our community. And promote mental health!

Oh My My!

Eeek! "Let's Celebrate Mental Health!" is THIS SUNDAY!!! I have behind on the blogging, I have been super swamped!! But its GOOD!! :)

So, everything is coming along great! I am soooo excited for the event! I just finished putting the gift bags together, (they are so packed full of goodies!) And collected the last of the raffle prizes! And all the models for the fashion show are in order too! There are some hot little foxes struttin' there stuff on the runway!! Its going to be so fun!

Recently, there was a press release in the Barrie Examiner about the event, and informing the Simcoe community of Coun. Andrew Prince's, (Ward 9) return from a medical leave. He will be speaking at the event! Which is AWESOME! He has some great things to speak about, and really supports The Canadian Mental Health Association. I was a little disapointed with how the Barrie Examiner twisted the press release, and focused on a lot of negative and unnecessary things on Coun. Andrew Prince's behalf...read on and see for your self....

I wrote a letter to the editor, which I doubt will get published, but I have re-posted it for my friends, family and fellow blogger followers to read....

"After reading the article recently published in the Barrie Examiner, online, I cant help but shake my head.

Don't you think you should be focusing on the positives that Coun. Andrew Prince is doing for our community and not on his personal life for a change? I speak on behalf of many readers, when I say I am are pretty sick of the negative repeats that you report about Coun. Prince's behalf and other members of city council.

I think that furthering your research on the event "Let's Celebrate Mental Health!" would have been wise to promote for our community. Along with focusing more on the positives of this great event and good cause members of council are participating in.

I was not only pleased with the support Coun. Prince expressed on this event, but other members of city council. Its pretty typical that the media decided to twist a great story into a nasty one and paint the picture of an evil villain to some.

Its also a shame that there has been no positive attention on this event, especially with the negative attention mental illness and mental health issues receive. Aren't we as a community supposed to be bringing more good into the world? Great article."

Anyways....I am REALLY excited to have Coun. Andrew Prince speaking at this event, I recently met with him to touch base on the event, and he is a super nice guy, with a great positive energy and outlook on life. There are other members from city council attending the event, which is also fantastic. Its great to see the City of Barrie supporting a great cause!

Aside from the event, I got a chance to get a sneak peak at one of the pics from the creative shoot I did with Rowell Photography.....SO BEAUTIFUL! I cannot wait to see the final product!!

Aaaand I am super excited to start working on my Contessa Entry! I haven't competed in a long time! And I have done pretty well in the past competitions I have entered. I just really didn't have the time or finances to compete again. So, here I go!! Wish me luck!! :)

I need to go get glammed up myself for something! Im so long overdue for a girls night out to shake it!
I have had sooo much support for my event though from different business since my interview. Its so awesome! I really hope there is a great turn out! I so badly want to make this an annual thing! Make it BIGGER and BETTER every year!!
Well I got lots of positive feedback from it....even though I wasnt so thrilled....I need someone else to interview me! I have the interview bug! lol Thats all I have been thinking about. Promoting, Marketing, Business!! I love it!
Well, Im going back to work...getting myself out there!

I just watched the re-airing of Rogers Daytime TV....saw myself....I need to lay off the carbs lol

No, really Im just so excited I got the opportunity to promote my event and my business! Im so proud of myself also for openly talking about my own personal experiences with mental illness. I was so incredibly nervous on air! There were so many things I didnt mention like where to get tickets ("By The Sea Boutique", "Oxygen Salon and Spa", "The Healing Oasis", and "Extreme Tanning" on Big Bay Point Rd), I also didnt mention that everyone who buys a ticket to come to the event, gets an amazing event gift!!! These are some awesome gifts from all the vendors participating and more! ahhh well! Hopefully people will call and email, and twitter, and facebook me for more information! :)

I wonder what my bf is going to say about my tv appearance? and my parents? hmmmmm....?

Ok, so....as I prepare myself for Rogers Daytime tomorrow, (yes that's right, I am going to be on Rogers Daytime @ 11am...our local cable channel...channel 10 in Barrie for those that do not know yay!) I realize how much is actually going on in the world of Krystie Ann Makeup Artist. And how hard I am working. And how many people support and LOVE me and how GRATEFUL I am.
I have a whole lot goin on....and I am LOVIN it!
I had an awesome creative bridal shoot with Rowell Photography yesterday. (Look for some images in the next issue of PIE magazine!)
I am furiously working on my charity event for The Canadian Mental Health Association. "Let's Celebrate Mental Health" Which is happening in counting down in 16 days...March 28th 2010 EEEK! :)

I have been crazy busy booking up my 2010 wedding season, which is amazing!! I have some awesome bookings with some fantastic brides coming up!
And I have been collaborating with some very talented people working on some future projects....which I will keep you posted on! ;) I have always said:

"Everything that happens, happens for a reason."

And everyday I am reminded of how true that saying is. And the difficult journey it has been to get me to where I am today, happened for a reason. And thank GOD it did!

Oh my goodness, it has begun. Krystie Ann now Blogs! lol

I have had so much going for Krystie Ann, Makeup Artist. I figure along with Facebook, Twitter and my website....why not start blogging to keep my fans updated, along with getting deeper with them! This will be a glimpse into my life simply as Krystie Ann. Not just the makeup artist.
